What is Verbal Humiliation?
Verbal Humiliation is a form of erotic humiliation in which an individual is being shamed or degraded verbally. It is used by Doms/Dommes as a form of emotional, mental, and or psychological punishment or torture.
Theoretical/ Physical/ Psychological Background
The practice and application of verbal humiliation is very diverse.
Those who enjoy giving or receiving verbal humiliation often enjoy specific topics or wording. For instance, submissive may have trigger words—words or phrases that evoke strong emotional arousal.
Humiliation may be specific to ones body type or parts, a failure to comply or complete an action, or even reference things outside of a scene. Care must be taken to ensure that humiliation is done so that it does not cross over from play to actual emotional verbal abuse.
In a typical Humiliation Play, the dominant is the one humiliating the submissive. It can be used to establish or reinforce Dominant/submissive roles. Submissives can take part in giving verbal humilition by mocking the Dominant or being otherwise bratty. It is also common for Dom’s to require a submissive to repeat words said about them to reinforce or otherwise humiliate them.
Practicality/ Do’s and Don’ts
Humiliation Play is a consensual activity. It can be mentally, emotionally and psychologically taxing. Extreme verbal humiliation can lead to feelings of insecurity, anxiety and depression. Words are considered as a very potent weapon that can leave long-term wounds and scars. Some words can cause people to remember terrifying events. To avoid inflicting psychological trauma to the submissive prior to a scene or session you should:
- Agree upon words or topics that the submissive enjoys.
- Have a list of topics or words that are not to be used.
- Establish a safe word or situation if the humiliation is becoming too much.
The dominant should prepare some type of safety net or precautionary measure in case the submissive experience psychological distress or mental breakdown. The most basic step in psychological first aid is isolation and breathing exercises. Some submissive may want to be comforted or reassured by their partners in such cases while others may prefer to be left alone to process their thoughts and emotions. Emotional aftercare after verbal humiliation is just as important as physical aftercare. Reinforcing that these things were only said in the context of the scene. Let your sub know that you are happy with them and proud of their performance to reinforce a positive connection.
