What is a Pump Gag?
A pump gag is an inflatable mouth gag used in BDSM play. It is placed inside the mouth and then inflated to a point where it is fixed in place and keeps the mouth open. It can be combined with a strap or an O-Ring gag to keep it in place.
Pump gags serve the same function as many other gags used in BDSM. They limit the ability of the wearer to speak or protest, distort the facial features, and cause light discomfort. Pump gags differ from more common gags in the following ways:
- They do not require straps. As the inflatable part fills the mouth, teeth generally help keep the gag in place.
- The discomfort in using them can be increased or decreased as the Dom chooses.
- They can be combined or use with an O-Ring gag to then make the pump gag.
Using a pump gag on a submissive can be humiliating. It is one of the most severe communication limiting gags available. It will cause excessive drooling, face distortion, and can be very punishing to wear for long amounts of time.
Dos and Don’ts
Like all BDSM mouth wear, pump gags come with some risks. Prolonged use can cause discomfort to the muscles in the mouth and the jaw itself. It can cause a repetitive stress injury that can lead to TMJ or lockjaw. If inflated too much, the inflatable sphere could pop and injure or choke the wearer.
If a submissive indicates a pump gag should be removed, it should be deflated immediately. Due to the limiting verbal communication, sounds and or body movements should take the place of a safeword. This should be negotiated prior to the start of a scene.
Related Practices and Fetishes
A ring gag, with a round ring in the middle, is typically used in conjunction with a pump gag. Other types of gags are ball gags, Jennings gags, cleave gags, and even rope between the lips and teeth during bondage.
