What is “Electro Play”?
Electro play (also called erotic electrostimulation, electrosex or electrical play) involves any form of BDSM play that makes use of electricity or electrically powered devices for stimulation. In electro play, the nerves of the body, are stimulated using different power sources. Most often this kind of play is focused on genitalia, but it is not always required. These power sources include EMS, TENS and/or a Violet wand.
TENS (Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) refers to many of the devices used in this kind of play. Transcutaneous refers to the applied currents designed to stimulate nerves. It is used by connecting the device to the skin using at least two electrodes. These can be applied with sticky pads, clamps, or other means depending on the kind of play involved.
EMS (Electrical muscle stimulation) or electromyostimulation focuses on using electric impulses to instigate muscle contraction.
Violet wands were originally used as electric and neon testers. More recently they became more commonly used to provide high-frequency of electricity to the body for sexual stimulation.
History & Evolution
As early as the 1740’s, the combination incorporation of electricity for entertainment purposes is already being practiced. Since then, the development of electric belts in the 1800s, insertable electrode attachments in the 1830s, and several other electric devices for nerve stimulation became more common and frequent.
An investigation conducted by the American Medical Association in the 1920s concluded that the use of electrical devices, particularly electric belts and the like are for the purpose of mechanical masturbation.
Later on, the Relax-A-Cizor was introduced in the 1950s. At that time, electrostimulation was already gaining much recognition in society. The Relax-A-Cizor was originally invented to stimulate the muscles of a patient in a relaxed state. Now, the device is also being used on a person’s sex organs.
In the 1970s, TENS units were introduced, followed by the titillator and power box in the 1980s.
Practicality/Do’s and Dont’s
Different power sources can be applied in order to make electro play work. Erotic electrostimulation power sources, homemade power sources, medical power sources, and even body toning and massage units are among the options for stimulating electro play.
With electricity playing a key role in electrostimulation, much care and caution are needed when using electrically powered devices. It is best to try electro play only when one or both of the players are highly familiar with the use of such devices. At the same time, since these devices are likely to be connected to a person’s sex organs along with other sensitive areas of the body, consent and an elaborate set of guidelines helps ensure the safety and scope of responsibility of the parties involved.
Related Practices & Fetishes
Electroejaculation is a procedure conducted with male patients in order to collect semen samples. The collected semen samples are used in treating ejaculatory dysfunction in human males as well as for research purposes for breeding different species.
Erotic electrostimulation (E-Stim), on the other hand, involves the application of mild electrical chargers or currents to different regions in the body to stimulate sexual or erotic sensations.
