What is Crop?
Crop or riding crop is a type of short whip that is commonly used in horse riding as back up natural aids of a rider. In the BDSM context, a crop is used to punish or torture the bottom or the submissive through impact play.
Theoretical/ Physical/ Psychological Background
A riding crop is usually made using a wooden cane or shaft made out of similarly flexible material like fiberglass. The cane is covered with leather or fabric for grip on one side. The other end of the crop usually has a flat piece of leather, a corded knot, or other flat striking side. Crops are considered as a type of whip. However, it is relatively shorter than common whips, between 18 and 24 inches on average. The length of the crop is specifically designed to inflict pain thought minimal movement.
In Impact Play, the smaller the point of contact between the object and the skin, the more pain is delivered. The keeper or wound cord is designed in such a way the pain is concentrated in one area. Crops can be used on almost any part of the body as long as care is taken in how hard one is hitting. When combined with bondage or blindfolds, the suddenness of a strike or not knowing when the next will come can be exhilarating.
Crops can be used sensually as well. Stroking a lover with the soft leather end over erogenous zones to tease and excite them. It can be used by a Dom to remind a sub of their posture. It can be placed in a submissive’s mouth as a gag or to engage an oral fetish.
Practicality/ Do’s and Don’ts
Like all impact play, one should be careful of where and how hard they are striking someone. Unless consented to beforehand, if breakage of the skin occurs play should stop immediately and first aid applied. Striking over organs or genitals can cause lasting nerve or internal damage. If any sexual or bodily fluids come in contact with the crop it should be sanitized between uses.
Related Fetishes and Practices
Crops fall under the larger family of whips such as floggers, bullwhips, cat o’ nine tails, and the like. Other impact play toys and equipment are paddles, canes, and belts.
