Endorphin Rush refers to the sensation caused by the overflooding of brain chemicals as a result of intense experience. Many describe this feeling as a sort of “high” – a mix of euphoria and energy. Endorphin rushes can regularly trigger in the body when participating in activities such as sex or high-risk sports. However, BDSM seeks to activate this rush as part of the payoff of play, evoking it through pain, discomfort, or roleplaying. The goal is to give the sub an exhilarating high as a result of the activities. The body can also experience a drop in energy as the brain chemicals get washed out of its system, leading to a low-energy feeling known as a “subdrop”. Aftercare is done partly to help mitigate the side effect of a subdrop.
