Etymology & Use in BDSM Subcultures
“Boot” or “Boots” originate from the Old French term ‘bote’ (meaning “a high, thick shoe”) and the Middle English term ‘boote’ (meaning “shoe”).
In BDSM/Leather culture, boots are most often used to perform boot blacking or boot worship. Boot blacking refers to either the practice of subs (slaves) honoring their Dominant (Dom) who has “earned their leathers”. “Earning leather” means that the Dominant has successfully mastered a specific skill or performed a difficult scene and has therefore earned them the permission to dress in leather. An individual who is more experienced in BDSM grants the permission. Boot blacking is performed as an act of respect towards a Dom or older member of the scene.
The leather subculture is closely associated with the practice of boot blacking and boot worship in BDSM culture. Leather boots are among the staple garments in organized sexual activities involving both BDSM culture and leather subculture. People with a fascination for leather fetishism BDSM and/or S&M .
