What is a Bit Gag?
A bit gag, a common type of bondage gear, is a barrel-shaped tube that is held in the mouth. Its name is derived from the resemblance to the bridle that is used for horses.
Bit Gags as BDSM Gear
Bit gags are one of the most common variants of mouth gags used in BDSM after ball gags. Depending on the size of the gag they are generally more comfortable for the wearer. The bit, the bar or tube placed between the lips and teeth, is generally thinner than a ball gag. It still allows for some vocalization by the wearer, usually the submissive, and also promotes salivation and drooling.
Like all other types of gags, bit gags are used to further subdue or punish a submissive. They can cause mild discomfort, reduce speech or complaining, and can be humiliating to the wearer. While gag use is traditionally associated with BDSM, many vanilla couples experiment with them as well.
Dos and Don’ts
Bit gags are comprised of a bar that is placed between the lips and teeth and a strap that goes around the wearers head to hold it in place. Bits can be made out of many different materials. The most common materials used are metal, wood, plastic, or silicone. Silicone bits can be fully soft or a soft outer layer around a hard center.
Bit gags are not suitable for rough play around the face. Any kind of impact risks damage to teeth or bones. Bits made of harder materials like metal or plastic should be reserved for more experienced players. Those new to bit gags, in BDSM or vanilla sex, should always start with softer variants.
An individual who is gagged should never be left alone when wearing a bit gag to ensure safety at all times. Instead of a safeword, patterned noises can be used as a replacement for a call for help since his/her words are incomprehensible when wearing a bit gag. Extended use of any type of gags can cause muscle, joint, or nerve pain.
Related Practices and Fetishes
Bit gags are used in many types of pet or animal role play. Pony play fetishists are the most common sub group to use bit gags in almost every type of session. Other types of common gags are ball, rings, and medical gags.
