    PEP TALK

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta praised the performance of the club's record signing Nicolas Pepe after his side's 4-0 win over Newcastle United.

The Ivorian international scored one and set up a further two for the Gunners, as the winger put in an outstanding display at the Emirates.

Arteta said: “We just need consistency from him [Pepe]. The way he applied himself defensively he was top drawer, things he wasn’t doing in the past.”

The North London club registered only their seventh league win of the season to move up to tenth in the Premier League table.

    BUK IN FORM

Bukayo Saka was named man of the match for Arsenal after the side's supreme second half showing earned them a 4-0 win over Newcastle United.

Boss Mikel Arteta must have launched into his lacklustre troops after a 45 minutes to forget.

They came roaring out of the blocks after the break and won a deserved three points thanks to goals from Aubameyang, Pepe, Ozil and Lacazette at the Emirates.

The result leaves Arsenal six points adrift of fifth position and potentially Champions League qualification after Manchester City's Uefa ban for the next two seasons.

    BANG BANG!

Arsenal scored twice in three minutes at the Emirates to earn a 2-0 lead against Newcastle United.

Skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang broke the deadlock in the 54th minute with a brilliant header after Nicolas Pepe cut in from the right-hand side to deliver a great ball into the back post.

Just three minutes later Bukayo Saka nutmegged Valentina Lazaro and then crossed to set up Pepe who scored with a side foot finish.

The club's record signing will be boosted by a goal and an assist in Arsenal's first game back after their winter break.

With just over ten minutes left the Gunners will hope they can hold on to win a much-needed three points.

    HALF-TIME!

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle United.

A tame first half display from both sides with no real clear-cut chances.

If there is to be an opener one of the teams will have to attack with more intent and throw more players forward.

Arsenal will hope to improve after the break as they look to avoid yet another Premier League stalemate.

The Gunners have already had 13 draws this season and are in desperate need of a victory after only winning six games so far in this campaign.

    WRIGHT INSPIRATION

Gunners skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang revealed an Ian Wright pep talk has inspired him and strike partner Alexandre Lacazette.

Aubameyang said: “On Thursday, I spent quite a lot of time with Ian Wright.

“It’s always a pleasure to see him and to chat to him. He is an icon and inspiration for me and everyone at the club and around the club.

“I admire him as a man and as an Arsenal legend. He was so, so good on the pitch but also really chilled.

“He has the same mentality that Laca and I have, that’s why we get on so well.”

    TEAM NEWS!

Eddie Nketiah is the surprise choice to start up front with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe as the wide men either side of him.

Alexandre Lacazette and highly rated youngster Gabriel Martinelli must settle for a spot on the bench.

Spaniard Dani Ceballos is back in the starting line-up after an injury lay-off.

Mikel Arteta's side will be desperate for a Premier League win to restart their season after the winter break.

    HOW'S STAT

Arsenal kick off against Newcastle United in less than an hour – here are some of the key pre-match stats:

Arsenal have won 13 of their last 14 Premier League games against Newcastle, the only blip on their record came at St James' Park in April 2018.

Newcastle are on a run of seven successive league defeats at the Emirates, dating back to November 2010.

Mikel Arteta's side are unbeaten in all competitions this decade having recorded three wins and four draws since the start of 2020.

    DENNIS THE MENACE

Storm Dennis has wreaked havoc all over the UK with sporting fixtures being cancelled and postponed.

Although the weather may make it unpleasant for Arsenal's players at the Emirates when they host Newcastle United later, they should spare a thought for their ladies team who will not get the chance to take to the field.

The female Gunners have had their game against Lewes in the Women's FA Cup – due to take place today – postponed.

A club official said the decision was taken due to “crowd safety issues relating to the current weather conditions and Sunday's forecast”.

The side play their matches at Meadow Park – home of Boreham Wood FC – and the game will now be played next Sunday.

    HAD A WRIGHT GO

Arsenal legend and TV pundit Ian Wright has laid into the club's former manager Unai Emery after he blamed the squad for his dismissal.

Wright labelled the Spaniard “delusional” on the Kelly & Wright show.

Emery had told France football: “We have missed personalities this season to stay on track.

“And some stars did not have the right attitude and asked for more than they gave.”

But Wright hit back and said: “Whatever he [Emery] says the players weren't happy, there wasn't a vision or direction, the communication was poor.”

Wright thinks Emery showed class while at the club but his recent comments in the media suggest he may be bitter over the sacking and is trying to get himself out there while looks for a new job.

    ART OF DEFENDING

Arsenal host Newcastle United in the Premier League's 4.30pm kick off today.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is desperate for a win, the North London club have won only six league games this season – only the league's bottom two clubs Watford and Norwich have won fewer.

The former Man City assistant wants to shore up his defence to help his side pick up some wins.

Arteta said: ” I think we have to generate some defensive stability, but not by defending deep. I don't like that.

“It's by defending high and pressing the opponent as much as possible. But the process – together as many times as possible in the most efficient way – has to be done properly from here.”

    NOT GUNNER DO IT

Liverpool legend John Barnes fears the mighty Reds will miss out on emulating Arsenal's Invincibles – by losing one game.

They have not lost a single game out of the 26 they have played so far, winning match No25 against Norwich last night.

The only points they dropped was from a 1-1 draw with Manchester United in October.

Former England star Barnes, who played for the Reds between 1987 and 1997, told Bonus Code Bets: “I think they can go all season unbeaten, but I don't think they will.

“I reckon they will lose one game but ultimately, they will still win the title comfortably.

“At the end of the day it's not important for Liverpool to go unbeaten, it's important to win the league.

“They will be beat before the end of the season and that's fine.

“It doesn't matter how well your team is doing because it's the kind of league where anything can happen and a shock result could come against anybody, top or bottom half.

“I can't predict which games they will lose, but I do think they will be beaten this season.”

    AGENT SANTI

Arsenal have called up former star Santi Cazorla to ask about the situation surrounding his Villarreal teammate Samuel Chukwueze.

The Nigerian has been impressing with the Yellow Submarine, with four goals and four assists this season.

And it is not just the 20-year-old they are enquiring about with defender Pau Torres also being mentioned.

Speaking to Marca, Cazorla said about if any clubs had asked about the pair: “Yes, friends of Arsenal especially.

“They ask me about them and believe that tomorrow they can make the leap to the Premier League.”

    MORNING, GUNNERS FANS

Arsenal are currently preparing to welcome Newcastle to the Emirates this afternoon.

Mikel Arteta’s men are hoping to bag all three points against Steve Bruce’s resilient side as they look for their first league win since beating Man Utd 2-0 on New Year’s Day.

And they will also be hoping to boost their Champions League chances by taking advantage of any result between Chelsea and Man Utd on Monday.

There are a number of injury worries for the Londoners, with Cedric Soares, Reiss Nelson, Sead Kolasinac and Bukayo Saka all doubts.

Kieran Tierney is definitely out with a dislocated shoulder.

And it’s reckoned Arteta has run out of patience with the Scottish left-back.

Tierney has made just five league appearances since his summer move from Celtic.

And Arsenal are apparently ready to sell him to Leicester for £25million as a replacement for Chelsea target Ben Chilwell.

Meanwhile, former Gunner Santi Cazorla claims his old club have sought him for advice about Villarreal teammates Pau Torres and Samu Chukwueze.

The youngsters have been impressive this season and Cazorla reckons they would be smash hits in the English capital.

However, it has also emerged that Chukwueze, valued at a whopping £60m, could have joined the Gunners for just £4m three years ago.

He claims he was on the verge of signing a contract when Arsenal pulled the plug due to a disagreement over terms and payment.

The Gunners are in Europa League action later this week against Olympiakos before hosting Everton in the league next weekend.

    SOMETHING IN THE AAR

Man Utd should try and sign Aaron Ramsey from Juventus if Paul Pogba truly desires a move back to Turin, says Ray Parlour.

Talk that the Frenchman wants to return to Serie A refuses to go away after comments from his agent, Mino Raiola.

Parlour told TalkSPORT: “Aaron Ramsey could be on his way again after just one year at Juventus – would that be a good swap deal? He’s a super player. They’ll be a lot of clubs interested in him.

“Could he go to Manchester United? He’s the sort of player they need to score you goals from midfield.

“He’s a good age, he’s still got three or four good years ahead of him, so he would surely be on Man United’s radar.

“That could be an interesting move if they could have him as part of the deal. I’m sure Man United fans would be very happy if they got Ramsey for Pogba.

“United paid £89million for Pogba, so they’ll certainly want that back, so you’d probably says he’s worth up to £100m. Ramsey would be worth £50m or 60m.”

Ramsey has struggled for first-team starting places since his free transfer move from the Gunners last year.

    PIE IN THE SKY

Arsenal have told clubs they want £70million for star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gabon hitman has just one year left on his contract in the summer.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are said to be after the striker.

Inter Milan have also joined the hunt for the former Borussia Dortmund star.

PUZZLE IS A WORK OF ART

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has a £72million conundrum called Nicolas Pepe – and he's trying to work out that puzzle.

The 24-year-old Ivorian has just three goals for the Gunners in 14 Premier League starts.

Last season he hit 35 in 68 starts for Lille.

Gunners chief Arteta told the club website: “First of all he needs the right structure behind him to be able to provide the moments of quality and winning games, whether it’s assists, goals, dribbles or whatever it is.

“Afterwards he needs to have a much clearer picture of the things that are happening on the pitch, why they are happening and how he can solve them. I think he’s in the process of doing that.

“He hasn’t played 12 or 15 games in a row, which is a massive thing for a player in those positions which are more difficult on the pitch to make an impact in games, he needs to earn that with his performances.

“He was in France and was one of the biggest stars in the league. He made an incredible year.

“He comes here and a lot of people didn’t even know him and you paid that price tag. So for him to put his brain into this picture and solve all this is not easy. And he’s a really young player.”

    CAM AND GET IT

Real Madrid reportedly want to sign Arsenal target Eduardo Camavinga from Rennes as a long-term replacement for Casemiro.

The 17-year-old has caught the eye of Bernabeau boss Zinedine Zidane after his incredible spell of form in France.

According to Marca, Madrid are willing to pay up to £50million to secure the youngster's signature.

Casemiro has proved his potential in Ligue 1 this season after making 32 appearances in all competitions.

The France Under-21 star has managed one goal and one assist from the midfield.

Zidane will have to dig deep to sign him this summer as he is under contract with Rennes until 2022.

    WIZARD OF OZ

Mikel Arteta has praised Mesut Ozil's attitude ahead of tomorrow's encounter against Newcastle.

He told Sky Sports: “He has been unlucky with some of the times that he has put people through and they have not scored.

“Things like that would have made stats a little bit different.

“But you don’t go from where he was to where he can be in five weeks, I’m sorry. Even when you really want to do it, it doesn’t always go that way.

“You have to be so constant. But he is trying so hard and he is very willing.”

    IN FOR THE VIL

Santi Cazorla claims he’s been asked about Villarreal teammates Pau Torres and Samuel Chukwueze by former club Arsenal.

Torres, 22, and Chukwueze, 20, have both caught the eye this season.

He told Marca: “Yes (I’m asked about them), friends from Arsenal especially. They ask me about them and think they can make the jump to the Premiership tomorrow.

“It’s good that great teams are interested in young players from Villarreal, but for the moment I tell them to leave them alone here.

“They still have to take steps forward. They both have a great personality and their feet are on the ground.

“In Pau’s case he hears constant talk of City or Barcelona, but he is aware that he has to keep growing as a player and that in the future we will see where he can go.”

    TWO-FOR-ONE

Juventus will offer Manchester United £125million plus BOTH Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot in part exchange for Paul Pogba.

That is according to the latest reports in Italy, who claim the tempting package will be made to the Red Devils this summer.

French World Cup winner Pogba, 26, looks increasingly likely to leave Old Trafford after an injury-hit campaign.

Now La Gazzetta dello Sport state his old club Juventus have worked out a plan to try and ensure his return to Turin.

They have finalised a package worth £125m, which includes the midfielder’s wages, and are also ready to throw in both Ramsey and Rabiot to sweeten the deal.

    ART ATTACK

Mikel Arteta has delivered a warning to Gabriel Martinelli ahead of Sunday's home clash against Newcastle.

Speaking to Sky Sports: “He needs to digest a lot of things. The better you do, the more you have to start to digest what people think about you.

“He has to think ‘now, the opponents know me better, the spaces are smaller, I am going to have more attention.

“I still want to do what I was doing three weeks ago or four weeks ago, but now it’s not happening.’ As a young player, you need to go through that. The mental side of it is a process.”

    YES WAY, JOSE

Jose Mourinho believes Spurs are one of a number of clubs still capable of finishing in the Champions League spots.

Speaking to BBC One's Football Focus, he said: “First of all, I see much more clubs than people think.

“Sometimes it looks like, because Chelsea are the fourth and sometimes Tottenham is in fifth and Manchester United are the sixth, we are smelling the opportunity.

“I think people forget there are big contenders – Wolves, Sheffield United, Manchester United, even Arsenal, so it's not just about what's the distance between us and Chelsea.”

    NIC OF TIME

Mikel Arteta has declared that Nicolas Pepe must earn the right to be a starter at Arsenal.

He said: “First of all he needs the right structure behind him to be able to provide the moments of quality and winning games, whether it’s assists, goals, dribbles or whatever it is.

“Afterwards he needs to have a much clearer picture of the things that are happening on the pitch, why they are happening and how he can solve them. I think he’s in the process of doing that.
