MEGHAN Markle’s friends have rallied around the duchess after she announced with Prince Harry last night that they are stepping down as ‘senior’ royals.
The mum-of-one’s best friend, Jessica Mulroney, took to Instagram today to share a defiant message of support in the wake of the shocking news.
Jessica, 40, who has been a fashion advisor to Canadian PM Justin Trudeau’s wife Sophie, shared a quote by American filmmaker Gina Carey.
The text read: “A strong woman looks a challenge in the eye and gives it a wink.”
In addition to the defiant post, the Canadian stylist also posted a heart emoji on a post by journalist Katie Couric about the news.
Meghan, 38, and Harry, 35, posted on Instagram they plan to "step back" from royal duties and split their time between Britain and North America - with Canada expected to be their second home.
The couple say they will be "financially independent" as they "carve out a progressive new role", but will still support the Queen.
Yesterday the BBC reported no other members of the Royal Family were told before the bombshell announcement - with the Queen said to be "disappointed".
And a statement from Buckingham Palace admitted discussions with the couple will be "complicated".
An insider also told The Sun: "Their statement was not cleared with anyone.
“It breaks all protocol. This is a declaration of war on the family. The Queen is deeply upset. The Prince of Wales and Duke of Cambridge are incandescent with rage."
This is not the first time that Jessica has leapt to the defence of the couple on social media.
In August, she took to Instagram to call out “racist bullies”, following the backlash of Meghan and Prince Harry taking four private jets in 11 days.
Jessica’s post read: “When someone faces unfair criticism, you call it out.
“When that person is your friend and your family, you call these critics what they truly are.
“Shame on you, you racist bullies.”
Meghan befriended Jessica, who is married to Ben Mulroney, son of former Canadian prime minister, Brian Mulroney, when she lived in Toronto for her role in Suits.
The two women became firm friends after bonding over a mutual love of yoga, and shared photos of trips they took together.
The stylist is said to have flown over for four days to help Meghan prepare for her wedding, and also attended the royal’s star-studded baby shower in New York.
Jessica isn’t the only star to have defended Meghan and Harry’s decision to carve their own path.
In response to the news, outspoken actress Jameela Jamil praised the couple saying on Twitter: “And that folks, is what power looks like.”
Meanwhile, outspoken TV host Piers Morgan slammed their decision, saying: "People say I'm too critical of Meghan Markle - but she ditched her family, ditched her dad, ditched most of her old friends, split Harry from William & has now split him from the Royal Family.
"I rest my case".
